Get Covid Covered
One of the many challenges facing the African tourism industry right now is the Foreign Office (FCDO) Advisory against non-essential travel between the UK and Africa.
What it means is that, should people choose to travel against the official advice - for example those travelling for business or expat South Africans heading home for family emergencies - their travel insurance is rendered invalid.
Encouraging news however is that there are some insurers such as Battleface who are stepping up and covering travellers – not only for the usual travel insurance claims - but also including specific Covid-19 medical expenses for travellers aged 59 or under. Their policy covers medical evacuation, accidents, adventure sports and travel to isolated areas. It does not however provide cover trip for cancellations, curtailment of a holiday or lockdowns as a result of Covid-19.
Other companies are also helping to secure traveller confidence. Flight Centre is offering a Cover-More policy which covers Covid-related pre-trip cancellation, curtailment and overseas quarantine for complete peace of mind.
A lot of the airlines too are now including free Coronavirus cover for travel before 31 March 2021 when you book a ticket such as Virgin Atlantic, Ethiopian Airlines and Emirates. Terms and conditions apply so be sure to read the small print! #OpenAfricanTravel
