The Cocoon Collection appoints Travel Promoters and Umlingo
We are delighted to share that we have a gorgeous new client! The Cocoon Collection is a family-owned collection with three luxury resorts based in the magnificent Maldives archipelago and a further three properties in the exotic spice islands of Zanzibar, just off the coast of Tanzania.
Travel Promoters has also been appointed as their UK Sales & Marketing representative, so we will be working in close collaboration with Ailsa Tavares and her team, supporting their efforts with both consumer and trade PR to further elevate the brand.
“We look forward to working with Ailsa and her Travel Promoters team as well as Claire Roadley from Umlingo Travel PR to showcase our collection to a broader audience in the UK and beyond. Their expertise and reputation within the travel industry, together with our shared commitment to sustainable tourism, makes for a perfect partnership. We look forward to building new and nurturing our current relationships with the trade.” said Attilio Azzola, Founder and Corporate Sales Director for the Cocoon Collection.
The Cocoon Collection boasts six stunning resorts, each offering unique experiences that blend contemporary design and warm hospitality with local culture and natural beauty.
· Cocoon Maldives: The first design hotel in the Maldives. The resort offers 60 Overwater Villas & Suites, 90 Beach Villas, three restaurants and two bars, with décor by LAGO, an award-winning Italian designer.
· You & Me Maldives: A private, naturally chic Adults Only destination, perfect for couples seeking a secluded and romantic island getaway. The resort offers 99 Overwater Villas and 10 Beach Suites with a choice of 5 restaurants including the renowned H2O Underwater Michelin Star Chef branded Restaurant.
· Joy Island: A fitting name for this fun-focussed island, particularly popular with young couples and families looking for a wide range of activities and entertainment. Featuring 91 rooms on the beach and a further 60 rooms Overwater in the lagoon, just 40 minutes by speedboat from Velana Airport. A fully supervised kids club ensures parents can enjoy some down time, as well as enjoy a bit of diving, padel tennis or pampering in the Oasis spa!
· Pongwe Island is an Adult Only private island off the coast of Zanzibar with just five villas (including the Luxury Sultan Villa) and a gourmet restaurant. It has a strong eco-focus and is fabulous for a detox escape.
· Gold Zanzibar: Located in the north-west side of Zanzibar, fringing the fine white sandy beach of Kendwa, this 5-star resort offers 64 rooms and suites, with 8 villas with private plunge pools and butler service. Kendwa beach is not affected by the tides and seaweed, allowing Gold guests to swim and enjoy nearby water sports all day. Undoubtedly one of the best beaches in East Africa, with sublime sunsets! Guests can enjoy a choice of two restaurants, two bars as well as a spa and gym.
· Bawe Island: Launched in July 2024, Bawe is the first “one island, one resort” in Zanzibar with four à la carte restaurants, with “dine around” concept. It has real “wow” factor, spanning over 30 hectares with 70 exclusive villas, each featuring a private pool and butler service, just 15 minutes by speed boat from ancient and fascinating Stone Town.
“Across our portfolio luxury is always a given! But what sets out partner properties apart is how they raise the bar when it comes to personalised service, authenticity, personality and a general ethos for sustainable tourism that supports both conservation and communities. Most of our properties are independent and family-owned, which is why The Cocoon Collection is such a seamless fit, with one of its key drawcards being the forty plus years of history and passion invested by the Azzola family.” said Ailsa Tavares.
The Azzola family is committed to giving back where its properties operate. The Sofia Luna Azzola Foundation was founded in Zanzibar in 2016 and works alongside other NGOs to support local schools and orphanages. Since 2019, the foundation, in collaboration with generous guests, supporters and volunteers, is proud to have built a new kindergarten, a primary school and a sporting centre in Kendwa village. In the Maldives, The Cocoon Foundation was also set up in 2022 to support neighbouring communities of the Lhaviyani and Raa atolls.

Umlingo Travel PR appointed by Crater’s Edge
1 November 2024
Umlingo Travel PR is pleased to announce the addition of Wilderness Collection’s Craters Edge to its PR portfolio, effective 1 November 2024. This luxurious tented camp is perched on the north-eastern rim of Tanzania’s iconic Ngorongoro Crater, nestled in beautiful acacia woodland and, notably, just ten minutes’ drive from all the wildlife action on the crater floor.
Crater's Edge comprises 15 beautifully appointed tented suites designed for absolute comfort and immersion in nature, complete with authentic African décor and modern amenities. All suites offer 360-degree gas fireplaces, comfy leather armchairs, walk-in wardrobes and ensuite bathrooms with both showers and copper bathtubs. Large glass doors lead out to private viewing decks to soak up the panoramic vistas. Designed by Les Harbottle, the camp blends seamlessly into the surrounding bush and has a minimal footprint and impact on the ecosystem.
Nestled within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a world-renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site, Crater's Edge enjoys an enviable position, right on the descent road to the Crater floor, ensuring a quick and easy 4-minute drive to Lemala gate and access the floor before the majority of other vehicles can get there. This ensures a far more intimate, unrushed encounter with Africa’s Big Five and the annual migration. Its close proximity also means the camp is able to cater for beautifully set up private lunches right on the crater floor which truly sets the experience apart.
Foodies will love the camp’s sophisticated cuisine which showcase a diverse range of dishes that celebrate the abundance and local culture of the region. Guests can enjoy various activities including game drives, guided walks and stargazing under the Milky Way, as well as visits to the local Maasai village.

Travel PRs for Africa
In Africa there’s an wonderful spirit of ubuntu centred around collaboration and working together for the greater good. Inspired by this ethos, I have collated an updated list of some of the key travel PRs, mostly based in the UK, who specialise in promoting Africa, with a mix of wonderful African hotels, lodges and resorts, tourist boards, airlines, activities and Africa specialist tour operators in their portfolios.
I have updated this for WTM 2024 but anyone is welcome to use it. Hopefully this will be a useful resource for journalists and travel writers to remind them “who PRs who” - but that it will also enable us travel PRs to collaborate more on press trips, to share costs and offer a better, more rounded, sustainable and eco-conscious experience on the ground.

Mashatu to launch new “Lala Limpopo” Sleepout Hide in October 2024
21 August 2024
Elephant by night at the Mashatu hide by Kyle de Nobrega
Mashatu’s Giants by night at the hide by Kirsten Frost
Lala (meaning sleep) Limpopo will be available to book for exclusive use and will sleep up to four photographers or guests at a time. There is also a small kitchen and lounge/dining area, full bathroom with shower facilities and a separate bedroom for the tour leader, Mashatu ranger or C4 guide who is always available for safety, advice and tips. There will also be facilities for editing photography between filming and shooting. There is also a small outdoor courtyard to the rear entrance should guests wish to enjoy the sunshine and outdoors without disturbing the wildlife.
C4 PhotoMashatu's other underground hide, Matebole, is renowned in photography circles globally, with Greg du Toit's "Essence of Elephants" portrait winning him Wildlife Photographer of the Year in 2013, as just one example of the numerous award-winning shots taken there. Lala Limpopo now raises that benchmark even higher, with this new, “one-of-a kind” sleepout safari suite.
There will be an opening special of 50% running for the months of October and November 2024 for those eagerly awaiting, lenses at the ready. Lala Limpopo, as with the other hides in Mashatu, will then close from December 2024 until the end of February over the rainy season and will reopen from 1 March 2025. The rate for this additional activity will be $450 per person sharing per night or $650 to book one room. To book the whole hide for exclusive use will cost $1,600.
Lala Limpopo is booked as an additional activity for guests staying at one of Mashatu’s camps including Euphorbia Mashatu, Kolokolo Safari Home, Mashatu Lodge, Tuli Safari Lodge Mashatu, Mashatu Tent Camp and Shalimpo Safari Home.

A PHOTOGRAPHERS' DREAM UPLOADING …
Mashatu in Botswana's Northern Tuli Game Reserve is currently developing a brand-new luxury overnight photographic experience, the Lala Limpopo Sleepout Hide, due to launch in October.
Created in partnership with concessionaire C4 Photo Safaris, co-founded by professional photographer Shem Compion, the new hide has been subtly sunk into the ground to blend in with the surrounding scenery and will offer photography enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike the opportunity to view wildlife in absolute privacy from dusk till dawn.
The waterhole, previously known and loved by many as Pete's Pond, has always been a hive of wildlife activity as Mashatu's many herds of elephants and other animals and birds come down to drink and wallow in the waterhole - which will make for some the most thrilling wildlife encounters imaginable, given that they are at eye level, sometimes as close as a couple of meters away from the window. Innovative, non-intrusive lighting is also being introduced around the waterhole to ensure the best possible conditions for both daytime and nocturnal photography, with sensors to alert you to activity during the night and full control panel, allowing adjustment of the side, front and back lighting, as well as colour temperature and angle.
Equipment wise, photographers should bring everything … from wide angle to ultra-zoom lenses: 16-35mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm and up to a 500/600 lens. They can expect to be photographing elephants up close with a wide angle. A 400mm will be rewarded with tight images of an elephant trunk spraying water or perhaps a portrait of a leopard. For night and low light photography, the faster the lenses (low f-stop value), the better.

Bushtops raises the bar for “Wild Luxury” in East Africa
5 August 2024
Leopard, meet Rhino … at Mara Bushtops
Mara Bushtops in Kenya has shared the first images of their two fabulous family suites. Their pre-existing family tent, the Leopard Suite, has been given a complete interior overhaul, whilst the Rhino Suite is a brand-new addition to meet the increasing demand.
Both family-friendly tents can accommodate up to six people (or simply provide a couple with acres of extra room), with a pair of private tents with their own ensuite bathrooms, linked by a chic interior lounge, complete with a well-stocked mini bar and coffee machine. The tents are identical in design and overlook a busy wildlife corridor which leads from the surrounding hills down to the popular salt lick, ensuring fabulous game viewing. The family tents are also adjacent to the solar heated pool and facilities of the Amani Spa for easy access.
Designed by Andrin Schweizer, the genius behind so much of the Bushtops look and feel, the quality is exceptional, featuring a private hot tub on the generous deck, a stone dining table, a sunken lounge and private fireplace in front of the tent.
Rooms Revitalised and Reimagined at Serengeti Bushtops
Master of design Andrin Schweizer has just completely remodelled the interiors at Serengeti Bushtops in Tanzania, creating stylish, 5-star suites under canvas that embody the “wild luxury” experience that is so synonymous with Bushtops.
The redesigned suites now feature elegant new furniture and matching softs, with ceiling fans and subtle-lighting lanterns and generously stocked mini bars. Hand-cut slate from a local quarry has contributed dramatically to the revamped, upgraded bathrooms.
The camp also now offers four buggies, allowing guests to be shuttled with ease and speed between their suites and public areas, like mini safaris. Of course, nothing matches a proper game drive expedition in our open-sided Toyota 4x4s, but these buggies are always a big hit with guests.
A Beauty of a Beest
Speaking of game drives, the countdown has officially begun to launching Bushtops’ fabulous new beauty of a Beest, which will offer a one-of-a-kind safari experience in the Serengeti! Watch this space...

📽 Danita de Canha
Meaning the "Land of Giants," Mashatu offers unparalleled wildlife experiences away from the crowds, including encounters with the largest herds of elephants on private land in Africa and some of the best big cat sightings you will find anywhere.
Why is it called the Land of Giants?
Mashatu is home to Africa’s 7 Giants:
🐘 Largest land mammal, the elephant
🦒 Tallest mammal, the giraffe
🦁 Largest cat, the lion
🦌 Largest antelope, the eland
🥚 Largest bird, the ostrich
⚖ Heaviest flying bird, the kori bustard
🌳 Largest trees – the iconic Baobab’s which tower over the dramatic Northern Tuli landscapes
For me it is also the vast landscapes that stretch as far as they eye can see - and the endless skies, which, thanks to the combination of dust and beautiful light, put on a show of the most magnificent sunsets imaginable.
Mashatu is all about adventure – whether you are exploring on one of their “Hold on Tight” game drives (where you navigate sheer riverbeds like they are molehills!), on guided walking safaris, by mountain bike or on horseback - not to mention their photographic safaris where you can while away the hours in the award-winning underground Matebole photo hide. In just 3 hours last week we saw more than 200 elephants come down to drink, and a plethora of other wildlife and birds! Simply magical (Umlingo means magic - and there really is no better description, so our partnership seems to have been aligned by the stars!).
Mashatu offers a choice of six properties including the ultra-exclusive Euphorbia Mashatu, family-friendly Mashatu Lodge and Tuli Safari Lodge Mashatu, the more rustic Mashatu Tent Camp, the exclusive-use, luxury Kolokolo Safari Home and the self-catering Shalimpo Safari Home.
Having visited Mashatu eight years ago with my Dad, this visit felt like a homecoming, with most of the original staff, trackers and guides still there – who all remembered me straight away! And it’s these passionate, warm and highly experienced people who truly set Mashatu aside.
It was also a huge honour to spend time on the press trip with owners Stephen Lansdown CBE and his wife Maggie, and Managing Director, Mark Kelly.
Thanks to the lovely journalists who joined us last week Emma Gregg, Andrew Dent, Ian Packham and Tessa Buhrmann.
Onguma Tented Camp enjoys a makeover
15 April 2024
Onguma Nature Reserve on the fringe of Namibia's iconic Etosha National Park has relaunched Onguma Tented Camp, following a refurbishment. The tents have had an extensive makeover, with new canvas fly sheets – and the addition of an extended deck with more shade to accommodate new wood-fired hot tubs, which have proved so popular at Camp Kala. Guests will love spending more time relaxing in their suites, which are perfectly placed to enjoy the views over the bush as the sun sets and the Milky Way takes centre stage.
Beautiful Etosha-stone-walled outside showers have also been added, offering the perfect mix of privacy and a dash of daring. Inside the tents, the suites all have new furniture and softs.
Each tent has a Nespresso coffee station and SMEG bar fridge and kettle for easy access to refreshments, including complimentary decanters of whiskey, cognac and gin. The main guest areas have also enjoyed a refresh and are looking warm and inviting.
"Tented Camp is looking fresh and rejuvenated following an extensive refurbishment. We kept the feel of it very similar as we know it is a firm favourite for many - but we have added new and enhanced some of the facilities for maximum comfort under canvas. Due to the popularity of the All-Inclusive experience, Tented Camp will also move to this board basis with an optional butler service also now available for guests who like an extra bit of pampering and personalised service from our team”.
- Marelize Conradie (General Manager)
Onguma has seen a number of exciting developments in recent years. In May 2021, the team created a one-of-a-kind “Onguma Dream Cruiser” sleep-out under the stars, beautifully converted from a game vehicle, complete with raised dining deck and four poster bed overlooking a watering hole - with a beautiful ensuite bathroom below.
Then, in November 2022 they launched the award winning four-suite Onguma Camp Kala which has since established itself as one of the hottest new ultra-luxury camps in Namibia (Conde Nast Traveller 2023).

A shortlist was voted for by exhibitors and buyers on the event feed and across social media platforms. A final poll was held to pick the two winners, who will each receive a R12,000 donation on behalf of the show. Organisers Storm Napier and Allie Hunt are delighted to announce the winners as:

African Specialist Travel PRs Collaborate
10 January 2024
In Africa there’s an wonderful spirit of ubuntu -which essentially means “I am what I am because of who we all are”. Its all about collaboration and working together for the greater good.
Inspired by this ethos, I have collated a list of some of the key travel PRs, mostly based in the UK, who specialise in promoting Africa, with a mix of wonderful African hotels, lodges and resorts, tourist boards, airlines, activities and Africa specialist tour operators in their portfolios.
It may seem odd to be sharing the details of “competitors”, but I like to think that we are all unique, its a big continent :o) - and that we should be working together to promote tourism to this beautiful destination.
This list is not only intended as a useful tool for journalists and travel writers to refer to as a “who does who” black book - but hopefully it will also enable us travel PRs to collaborate more on press trips, to share costs and offer a better, more sustainable and eco-conscious experience on the ground.

Umlingo partners with Bushtops Safari Camps
6 November 2023
Umlingo is delighted to announce a new PR partnership with Bushtops Safari Camps in East Africa, to elevate their already exceptional reputation in the tourism industry.
Owned and managed by the third generation Stuart family, Andy and Claudia have established three unique camps that offer a superlative “wild luxury” experience under canvas.
Their first camp, Mara Bushtops, was launched 17 years ago, located in a private concession on the fringe of Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Park, overlooking a substantial natural salt lick which attracts diverse wildlife from miles around – providing incredible sightings right in front of the camp’s restaurant and spa.
Perfectly placed on the pathway of the annual wildebeest migration, they also have two camps in Tanzania namely Serengeti Bushtops located in the northern Serengeti and then a third, very unique camp which moves seasonally between the central and southern Serengeti, in sync with the famous wildebeest migration.
Roving Bushtops unfolds like a Meccano set from canvas clad shipping containers, transforming as if by magic, into the most beautiful of safari tents – complete with ensuite bathrooms and the gorgeous hot tubs so synonymous with the Bushtops experience. You can actually watch this fascinating process unfold in a timelapse (literally) on their website.
Bushtops Safari Camps has long been synonymous with unparalleled safari adventures that blend unspoiled wilderness and adrenaline fuelled safari encounters with exceptional hospitality and sumptuous accommodation.
Bushtops offers an array of game drives, guided bush walks, cultural encounters and hot air balloon safaris, providing guests with the opportunity to witness the Big Five and countless other species in their natural habitat.
They also offer some wonderful Bushcraft Challenge activities and immersive experiences for children.

Onguma Camp Kala - Namibia’s Newest Safari Camp
November 2022
On 1st November 2022, Onguma Camp Kala in northern Namibia welcomed its first guests. The ultra-exclusive safari camp is situated within the Onguma Nature Reserve, a 34,000-hectare wilderness on the eastern border of the iconic Etosha National Park.
Onguma Camp Kala accommodates just eight guests in four spacious suites elevated off the ground for an eagle-eye view over a beautiful waterhole where wildlife gathers around the natural spring - including elephants, rhino, lion, leopard, giraffe and various antelope.
Each suite has its own deck with a choice of wood-fired hot tub or a cool plunge pool as well as a walkway to a private sala with day bed … perfectly placed for an armchair safari or a ‘sleep out’ under the stars. The central guest area has a lounge, bar, dining room, interactive ‘show’ kitchen, viewing deck with fire pit, gym, massage treatment room and ground level photographic hide.
Onguma Camp Kala’s design concept was inspired by the spires of the termite mounds so common to this part of Namibia as well as the textures and muted tones of ebony and ivory reflected in the salt pans and surrounding desert – ensuring an authentic sense of place.
Camp Kala blends seamlessly into its landscape, has a light footprint on the earth – and centres around maximising the guests’ wildlife experience. The end result is testament to the creative talents and collaborative spirit of Nicholas Plewman Architects and Fox Browne Creative - whose portfolios include some of Africa’s most iconic, ecologically responsible lodges.
ACTIVITIES
Morning and Sundowner Guided Game Drives on Onguma Nature Reserve
Interpretive Bush Walks with specialist guides
Day drives into the adjoining Etosha National Park
Spend time at the popular Onkolo Photographic Hide – or relax at Camp Kala to enjoy all the waterhole action from the pool, viewing deck - or down below in the water-level hide.

OurAfrica.Travel Returns in February 2023
14 September 2022
Dates for the fourth OurAfrica.Travel virtual trade show have been announced as 20 - 24 February 2023. Whilst in-person trade shows are thankfully back in full-force, the reality is that there is still a place for online alternatives which are affordable, accessible and inclusive to all - especially whilst the market is still in recovery. Watch the Save The Date video here.
The third OurAfrica.Travel which ran from 22 March to 1 April 2022 clocked up an impressive 9,794 one-to-one meetings across various time zones over two weeks - as well as over 51,000 networking chats and 128, 000 profile visits. The show connected over 500 buyers from around the globe with 240 exhibitors based in Africa and the Indian Ocean islands - and feedback from participants was phenomenal. You can watch the “wrap video” here.
“We have been seeing a welcome surge of interest in Africa from the market and tour operators are reporting an increase in enquiries and bookings for 2023. A lot of travel companies have been and continue to recruit staff again, so OurAfrica.Travel will be a great way to kick off 2023 on the right foot with strategic partnerships firmly in place to meet that demand” says co-organiser Storm Napier.
As in previous years, there will again be no cost for travel agents, tour operators, media or travel buyers to participate - and the costs for exhibitors will be kept affordable and therefore accessible. The show is also focussed on making a positive impact on conservation and community, with some of the proceeds donated to two nominated charities. The recipients for 2022 were For Rangers which raises funds for anti-poaching rangers across Africa and the Mukambi Community School in Zambia’s Kafue National Park. The team will also again arrange prizes for the agents and operators who attend and engage.
“We have taken on board some of the feedback from the last show, and because teams are still stretched post-pandemic, we have decided to condense the show to one week for 2023 so that buyers can better focus their time and attention on having productive meetings for themselves as they choose whom they want to meet ” confirmed co-organiser Allie Hunt.

August 2022
Sala Beach House views from the fire pit
#SalaBeachHouse
South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal coastline has an exciting new boutique hotel - the effortlessly stylish Sala Beach House which officially opens on 25th August 2022.
Sala (meaning “stay” in Zulu) is an intimate, privately owned & run boutique hotel nestled between Ballito and Shaka’s Rock and offers breathtaking, uninterrupted ocean views of the Dolphin Coast, with private beach access to the protected tidal pool and gorgeous, sandy sheltered swimming beach at Thompson’s Bay.
The property comprises a main house with four luxury guestrooms, three incredibly spacious suites sharing the use of 2 pools, as well as a separate, self-contained 3-bedroom private villa with its own pool.
Soft textured furnishings and muted tones partner perfectly with carefully selected contemporary, natural furnishings and décor. The mood and balance set is one of rest, relaxation, sea air and sunshine.
No expense has been spared with in-room amenities and conveniences - from coffee makers to USB ports and international sockets (in abundance on both sides of the bed - this excites us !). There’s even sun tan lotion and after sun, fluffy beach towels and a sarong.
We are sure this new hideaway will fast become a firm favourite with singles and
couples wanting a smaller, boutique offering and the coastal surrounding. However, with just 10 rooms, Sala Beach House is also the perfect sole use location for celebrations and multi-generational gatherings too.
Sala’s prime location guarantees “wow” factor as a backdrop to its infinity pool, yoga deck and fire pit. Just twenty minutes from King Shaka International Airport, Sala Beach is positioned as the perfect ‘beach’ partner for a safari pairing in northern Zululand.
The Sala Spa will be launching shortly and promises to deliver rejuvenation and relaxation with signature treatments and locally sourced amenities.

Dreaming Under Namibian Night Skies - Onguma Dream Cruiser
13 July 2022
Ever felt a little wistful of those intrepid adventurers who go off on expeditions – sleeping wild under the stars - or in a tent on the roof of their landy?
Well, Onguma in Namibia makes this dream a reality! They have custom built a “Dream Cruiser” with a romantic upper deck featuring a beautiful four-poster bed and lounge area – with an incredible bathroom downstairs complete with shower, flush toilet and basin.
Couples are dropped off at a beautiful spot overlooking a waterhole in the Onguma Nature Reserve, bordering Etosha just before sunset to enjoy sundowners on the upper deck. The chef delivers a decadent picnic dinner to linger over as darkness slowly falls.
The comfy bed, beautifully draped in nets, must surely be the perfect spot to watch for shooting stars and admire the endless Milky Way thanks to no light pollution … surrounded by the thrilling night sounds of the bush.
There is hot coffee and homemade rusks and biscuits to look forward to in the morning as the sun rises - before returning to whichever of the five Onguma lodges they are staying at, for a hearty Onguma-style breakfast.
To allay any concerns, there is an canopy over the bed in case the weather changes - and a ranger is on call via a two-way radio should anyone lose their nerve in the night – but this is an incredibly special and romantic way to be completely alone in the Namibian wilderness!
Onguma Nature Reserve is located on the eastern border of Etosha National Park and is a 5 ½ hour drive from Windhoek.
The Dream Cruiser is a real bucket list experience - and will combine perfectly with a stay at the new high-end Onguma Camp Kala which opens in November 2022.
It costs N$ 7,000.00 for the vehicle per night for two people.

We shared 4 news stories from our exhibitors each day and also secured some great coverage in the trade press which you can watch here in the little video showcase.
Etosha’s new Onguma Camp Kala will launch in November 2022
“Onguma Camp Kala‘s design has been inspired by the termite mounds so prolific in this part of Namibia as well as the textures and tones of Etosha Pan to ensure an authentic sense of place. We have brought in some of the best architects and interior designers to ensure the new camp is truly exceptional, has a light footprint on the earth and celebrates our incredible location” says Onguma Managing Partner Fritz Vorster.
Elevating the Etosha experience in more ways than one - one of the four Guest Suites at the new Onguma Camp Kala, set to open in November 2022.
Onguma Camp Kala to open in November 2022
21 March 2022
November 2022 will see a new high-end lodge opening on the eastern border of the famous Etosha National Park called Onguma Camp Kala. With its conical, mud plastered central tower resembling a termite mound and the whole camp elevated on wooden stilts - it is set to raise the benchmark to a whole new level - in more ways than one!
The thatched camp will offer front row seats to all the wildlife action at the floodlit waterhole below - with numerous vantage points to take it all in – be it the comfortable lounge, the intimate cocktail bar or the beautiful deck - shaded by day and warmed by a fire pit at night.
The dining area has an interactive “show” kitchen and all-day pantry to ensure everyone feels right at home. Guests can while away the hours in absolute comfort in the water-level photographic hide. There is a fully equipped gym and spa treatment room with a quiet yoga deck to enjoy between game drives and bush walks.

The comfortable seating area is equipped with a fully stocked personal bar. A hand stitched curtain separates the beautiful bathroom with bespoke double vanities, full-size bathtubs and generous shower from the bed areas. Each Suite has its own deck with an outdoor shower, wood-fired hot tub (burning invasive tree species), loungers and a seating area with a fire pit. A walkway leads to a private, shaded sala with a king-size outdoor day bed.
Rates will start from N$13,000-00 (about £660) per person sharing per night on an All-Inclusive basis. No under 12’s are allowed unless the whole camp is booked for exclusive use. OurAfrica.Travel is back!
1 February 2022
The travel trade collectively sighed in relief when Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands were removed, yet again, from the red list – but the reality is that many of us are still navigating our way out of the shrapnel of our beloved tourism industry.
Operators and agents are nervously calling back staff and even recruiting - praying that we can all return to normality. And whilst the green shoots of optimism are definitely pushing through, we could probably all do with something to reignite our Africa-selling MOJO.
That much-needed spark could very well be OurAfrica.Travel which will run between 21 March and 1 April 2022. This popular trade show, in its third year, will again be fully virtual to keep costs affordable, especially whilst the market is still in recovery. There will be some changes to the format – including lengthening the meeting times from 15 to 20 minutes as this is a key time for negotiating rates and contracting as the first show of the year – as well as inviting exhibitors from the Middle East to participate.
‘We’re all longing to travel and reconnect in person - but one of the undeniable positives that has come from the pandemic is how accessible, affordable and inclusive these online networking platforms are for smaller hotels, lodges and products – as well as bigger suppliers watching their budgets carefully still” , says OurAfrica.Travel co-organiser Allie Hunt.
OurAfrica.Travel 2021 held in March last year was an overwhelming success, clocking up almost 24,000 15-minute one-to-one meetings, across various zones, over two weeks - connecting over 1100 buyers from around the globe to 340 exhibitors based in Africa and the Indian Ocean islands. Regular exhibitors include New Frontiers, Wilderness Safaris, Singita, Red Carnation Hotels, Jamala Madikwe, Onguma Nature Reserve, Chiwani Safari Camps and Rovos Rail.
As in previous years, there will again be no cost for buyers to participate - and the costs to exhibitors are still very affordable, despite the upgraded platform, which now makes it easier to book your meetings in your own time zone. Not only is the show low impact, but some of the proceeds are also donated by way of a draw to nominated charities. The team will also again arrange numerous prizes for the agents and operators who attend.
‘This year we hope to get even more exhibitors involved and potentially add in more media opportunities too as travel steps back into the limelight – for all the right reasons! Many of our loyal travel writers are itching to get back out to explore some of the incredible attractions Africa, the Indian Ocean Islands and The Middle East have to offer, says co-organiser Storm Napier.
Mosetlha - Pure Unplugged Madikwe Magic….
1 November 2021
There’s a largely undiscovered, perfectly unpolished gem tucked away in South Africa’s Madikwe Game Reserve – and we are delighted to welcome this “special find” to the Umlingo Collection.
Mosetlha is a family owned and run bush camp in the heart of Madikwe. It is rare these days to find a camp that is still charmingly rustic whilst offering an unforgettable, world-class safari experience. This unfenced eco camp is firmly focused on “thrills over frills” and promises an authentic wilderness experience - with a minimal ecological impact.
Mosetlha has a wonderful story behind it. It was originally a retirement passion project started by Chris and June Lucas - a base from which to train field guides. It later started opening for guests on weekends to provide these newly qualified guides with work experience – and grew from there as word got out.
Today the bush camp is managed by their daughter Caroline and her team and comprises 10 raised wooden cabins, sleeping up to 16, with partly open sides to truly “connect” with the bush - and toilet and shower facilities a short (fenced) walk away. Comfy beds, delicious meals cooked over an open fire and warm hospitality ensure you will want for nothing!
Mosetlha is all about getting back to basics. Unplugging to reconnect. The camp is purposely and proudly off grid – lit by night by beautiful oil lanterns and its safari-style bucket showers heated by donkey boiler - a charming highlight for many guests.
As a previous guest explained “it’s like roughing it in total luxury!”
There are many luxury lodges in Madikwe - but only one eco-camp. Mosetlha is proud to tick not just 5 boxes to qualify as a true eco-camp – but all 10!It offers a more affordable alternative for those wanting a full-board, professionally guided safari experience (Jonny and Justice are exceptional rangers!) in a Big 5 Game Reserve.Rates start from around R3,495 (about £190) per person per night sharing.
How do we know Mosetlha gets it right? Over 50% of its predominantly international guests are repeat clients and their TripAdvisor rave reviews echo this sentiment!

Pssssst… have you heard?
Africa is Open for Business!
15 October 2021
The announcement on 7 October that most countries in Africa were coming off the UK’s dreaded “red list” has been welcomed with much excitement and jubilation. Tour Operators and travel agents have seen a big jump in enquiries, airlines have put their prices up by around 150% due to increased demand - and social media channels are buzzing with frantic questions about travel insurance, Covid-19 testing both ends and paperwork! Many people have not seen family and friends for nearly 3 years and are itching to reunite - and wiggle their toes in African soil again! I’m desperate for my dose of safari too!
My own family is heading off to Mallorca (fingers crossed we are 3rd-time lucky!) for the October half-term and I have to admit, getting my head around all the various boxes that need to be ticked and by when - before, during and after our trip are a little daunting.
… And that’s just for a short haul break.
I am on many, many South African expat groups and the flurry of questions are the same on all of them - so I thought I’d collate some of the answers I have found in my own research in an easy document. It might not be 100% - but hopefully gives the basics to fact check yourself!
Botswana’s New Mashatu Euphorbia Villas
27 September 2021
The Mopane tree with its unique butterfly-shaped leaves and kidney-shaped pods is often associated with “life” in Botswana – as they are the main food source for a lot of wildlife in the dry season. The Mopane is also the inspiration behind one of Botswana’s most exciting new safari lodges - Mashatu Euphorbia Villas which welcomed its first guests in May 2021, almost a year later than originally planned due to the pandemic.
The result is however well worth the wait! Just eight eco-friendly safari villas have been built using locally sourced materials into a cliff face, tucked away between a forest of candelabra euphorbia succulents. Each villa exudes earthy glamour - complete with a spacious viewing deck and solar-heated plunge pool to soak up the views over the Bojale river in absolute comfort. In addition to the full indoor ensuite bathroom, there is also an outdoor rain shower and a “loo with a view”. Meals are enjoyed in the beautiful Boma-inspired restaurant, in “the nest” cocktail deck/lookout – or in the privacy of your suite.
This “eco-camp” is proudly off-grid – powered by solar energy (the reserve enjoys 95% rain-free days so it would be silly not to!) and uses state-of-the-art grey water recycling systems to ensure its long-term sustainability.
Mashatu is known as the “land of giants” as everything appears larger than life! Big, beautiful skies – infinitely blue by day and starry by night. Vast tracts of wilderness dotted with iconic, mighty baobab trees. It is also home to enormous herds of elephant, the world’s largest antelope (eland), the world’s largest bird (ostrich), the world’s tallest mammal (giraffe), Africa’s heaviest flying bird (kori bustard), Africa’s largest cat (lion), the world’s fastest land mammal (cheetah) and one of Africa’s rarest predators (Wild Dog).
It’s also a place for big adventures with a small impact – where guests are actively encouraged to enjoy their safaris with a dash of adrenaline instead of carbon – be it on foot, by mountain bike, on horseback or in a photo hide – rather than only enjoying the twice daily game drives. Mashatu’s guides are some of the best in the business with an average of 14 years of service. With a maximum of 4 guests per vehicle at Mashatu Euphorbia Villas, this is one of Africa’s most personalised safari experiences.
Mashatu is committed to conservation and community upliftment and works in close partnership with the Tuli Conservation Trust and Children in the Wilderness. Almost all (97%) staff across the 4 camps are Motswana, making Mashatu the largest employer in south-eastern corner of Botswana. During lockdown, Mashatu paid out in excess of BWP12 million in salaries and wages, retaining all staff members despite its lodges being closed. Mashatu is also currently funding a nurse, Covid PCR & rapid testing services 24/7/365 at Limpopo Valley Airfield for the Tuli block community and is a ‘Travel Partner’ of The Long Run via its Classic Safari Africa membership.
There are daily flights from Johannesburg’s Lanseria airport to Mashatu’s Limpopo Valley Airstrip where, in normal times, guests can make use of on-site immigration and customs facilities. At the moment, due to the pandemic, they are doing an extra hop via Gaberone at Mashatu’s expense.
BOOK IT:
Rates at Mashatu Euphorbia Villas start from around US$1000 per person per night sharing including luxury safari villa accommodation, all meals, most alcoholic drinks as well as all game drives. If you book 4 nights you only pay for 3 if you stay between 11 January and 30 April 2022.
Contact Charlie at For Rangers Travel + Adventures to book your tailormade Botswana safari (forrangersadventures.com / 0203 886 14 24), knowing that not only will you be supporting an incredible eco-friendly lodge, but that 40% of the profits from your holiday will also be donated to support wildlife rangers in anti-poaching patrols across Africa.

Tuk Tuk South For Rangers
10 September 2021
Tiktok Tales by Tuk Tuk - All #ForRangers
Africa is bleeding without its tourists. The impact of 18 months of lockdown has been devastating. Revenue from tourism is central to the conservation of some of the planet’s most important habitats and wildlife; without it, many of these are in trouble. Poaching, bushmeat, illegal logging and the exploitation of natural resources have all risen dramatically. Those charged with preventing this, wildlife rangers, have seen an increase in their workload, despite many having their funding and salaries slashed. Rangers need help.
With this in mind, Jasper, Josh, Ivo and Robbie, four conservation minded adventurers living in Kenya, decided to embark on a daring and bone rattling expedition to raise both awareness and money for rangers on the frontline – by driving from Kenya to Cape Town in Tuk Tuks!
The Tuk South team is in the process of transforming its two 8HP Piaggio Tuk Tuks into machines capable of surviving 7000 kms of famously bumpy roads. Installing everything from skid plates and roll cages to solar panels and fold out kitchens (the progress of which you can follow online), their Tuk Tuk’s safari capabilities are slowly being realised.
As they journey from the equator to the southernmost tip of Africa, they will be crossing nearly 35⁰ of latitude and travelling through 7 countries, elephants, jungles, mountains, savanna and the ever hospitable Kalahari desert. The thrills and spills of their journey will be shared on social media as they go. Tuk South (@joshporters) has over 155,000 followers on TikTok, clocking up an impressive 15 million views, with many of their followers sharing their passion for sustainability, adventure and conservation. They will be putting their video-making skills to good use - visiting many conservancies, parks and reserves on the way down and telling their ranger’s stories. These stories will form the backbone of a documentary they aim to make on Covids impact on conservation (trailer below). Their content will also cover a healthy dose of adventure and the stories of the grassroot sustainability projects, conservation initiatives and community projects they search out along the way.
Be sure to watch their Documentary trailer
There are a number of ways you can show support via their website:
Sponsor their expedition ($500 gets your logo sticker on their Tuk Tuk - or they offer corporate packages for a sticker and a mention of thanks/quick company synopsis in one of their videos)
Donate to help them raise $10,000 for the charity “For Rangers”
Subscribe to their YouTube channel or follow them on TikTok - and ‘share’ their posts.

Ranger Danger on Africa’s Frontline
9 July 2021
The 31st of July 2021 is World Ranger Day. A day to reflect on, appreciate and commemorate the unsung wildlife heroes who have been injured or who have lost their lives in the line of duty – the so-called Thin Green Line.
The statistics are sobering. More than 1000 rangers have been killed protecting the world’s wildlife since 2003 - many of them sole breadwinners with no health or life insurance. The challenge? To do better… to travel greener… and to show solidarity and support for those brave men and women waging war on poachers in Africa.
It was this challenge that led travel expert Charlie Potter to set up new travel company For Rangers Adventures back in 2019. His dream was not only to offer immersive, carbon-neutral, sustainable safaris to some of Africa’s most pristine wildlife destinations – but to also give something back and make a real difference on the ground. That is why he is committed to donating a significant 40% chunk of all travel-generated profit to conservation - more than any other travel company.
With this in mind, Potter partnered with Kenya-based charity For Rangers, co-founded in 2015 by conservationist Sam Taylor. For Rangers has to date raised over $2.25 million for conservation – primarily through a series of endurance events and ultra-marathons around the globe. This funding has been a godsend especially over lockdown - funding ranger salaries, purchasing vital kit and equipment for patrols - as well as securing benefits like life and health insurance for rangers across 14 African countries.
Travel restrictions in the wake of Covid-19 have unfortunately led to a dramatic escalation in Africa’s poaching problems. Many rangers have been laid off or had their salaries slashed as park revenue is largely dependent on gate fees and tourism levies.
In the run up to World Ranger Day on 31 July, whilst we are still unable to travel freely, For Rangers is thus raising vital funds by selling branded clothing online. Any supporters purchasing caps, t-shirts and hoodies from the store not only fund conservation (50% goes straight to the charity) - but they also stand a chance of winning an incredible 6-night safari for two in Kenya.
Visit the store today to show your support #ForRangers. You can also book your bespoke safari adventure for 2022 knowing your stay will make a difference.

Belsentiero’s Cool New Pool … Under the Tuscan Sun
25 June 2021
Delighted to share the first photos of the brand new infinity pool at Belsentiero - with its fantastic views from its lookout on the slopes of Monte Amiata over Tuscany’s rolling hills and valleys.
We love options - and this is an incredible alternative to the equally lush hot tub! It’s the perfect spot to cool off and watch the sun set after a busy day exploring the one of Italy’s most special places - so beautiful in fact that the Val d’Orcia is an official World Heritage area.
Discover the countless charming hilltop towns, cafes and restaurants, wineries, and thermal spas … or just relax on the veranda sipping an Aperol Spritz or glass of Prosecco! Owners Jan and Renzo know all the best spots for an authentic Italian experience and are happy to share their insider knowledge with their guests. They offer a range of packages to suit all interests. I’m also told South African born Jan is a wizz on the barbeque/braai - and I cannot wait to experience this myself!
The intimate villa Bed and Breakfast sleeps just 8 guests - ensuring an exclusive experience and is ideally located near Pienza - roughly half-way between Rome and Florence.

KZN Newsletter 1 - January 2021
21 January 2021
At the moment the travel industry is under unprecedented pressure. We had all hoped that by now we would be past the worst of this pandemic and yet there seems no end in sight.
But the UK’s vaccine programme is underway - and a little bit of wanderlust, dreaming and planning your next adventure never hurts!
KwaZulu-Natal is a place I lost my heart to many years ago when I worked at Tembe Elephant Park. Ethos also represented Tourism KZN for many years and I wrote more newsletters for them than I can count! So I thought I would use this time in lockdown to share some positive news from this incredibly diverse province of South Africa and hopefully help, in my own small way, to boost tourism once we are allowed to travel again! Feel free to share Umlingo’s very first KZN Newsletter
Discover “South Africa with Gregg Wallace”
5 January 2021.
Be sure to tune in on Tuesday evenings for “South Africa With Gregg Wallace” at 7.30pm on ITV.
All episodes to date are also available on the ITV hub.
Masterchef's Greg Wallace enjoyed his 6-part foodie adventure pre-pandemic and his enthusiasm for South Africa - including a foodie twist in each episode - really makes you want to board a plane for Mzanzi!
Gregg’s trip was arranged by the incredible team at South African Tourism UK. Although, it has to be said, that the travel escapism has also resulted in a lot of homesickness for many expats like me who have not been able to visit friends and family this past year.
So pour yourself an Amarula/G&T and enjoy a bit of travel escapism to lighten the lockdown mood... and get planning that next trip to South Africa. Fingers crossed we will all be allowed to travel safely again. Read more on SAT’s website. #MeetSouthAfrica #ShareSouthAfrica
Test and Rest Covid-19 Tests at T5 Heathrow
The Sofitel Heathrow is eliminating the stress of PCR Covid-19 Tests
3 December 2020
There is a lot of very positive feedback from people using the Test & Rest service at the Sofitel at T5 Heathrow. It costs a very reasonable £199 for a double room including breakfast.
Guests need to have nil by mouth for 1 hour before doing the self-test and then submit their saliva samples before 8 pm. HALO will ensure the results are back from the lab by the next morning and guests can even print off their PCR certificates at reception before their flights - although they also get results on an app.
Apparently its a really great stress-free experience all round. The rate includes tests for both adults and any extra tests for kids over 5 are £69. This is much cheaper than most private PCR tests in the UK - and eliminates the stress about meeting the 72 hour deadline...
Apparently this service is also not only for guests staying over. They offer the same walk-in service for £80 pp.
